Karate is an individual sport where one gets to work on themselves, build their character and be able to learn to differentiate between right and wrong. In order to be successful at karate, one must learn discipline. The atmosphere in the ‘dojo’ where karate is mostly practiced is often positive, uplifting and motivational. Instructors refuse to tolerate fooling around and or excessive talking, these corrective actions often carry over into the classroom. This disciplined conduct learnt during karate by the youth often turns into better grades and controlled attitudes.
Karate students gain self-assurance through the insight that they are able to handle tough situations whilst being in control. The more they become stronger their confidence increases as they become less afraid of confrontations. This allows for an individual to stand up for themselves against bullies. The basis of relationships and karate revolves around basic respect for instructors, teachers, other students and respecting one’s self. Instructors use some of the practice time to discuss the importance of respect and how it affects each person’s life. Teaching this respect to the youth ends up carrying over into their daily lives and their schooling.
Karate has so far helped the youth learn, discipline, increased mental capacity, goal setting, respect, confidence and the realization of the effort that it takes to become a self-confident individual. Indeed, karate has alleviated the youth impeccably, helping them to reach their full potential.
